Communication is a skill every nurse should have. Communication is not all about speaking. It is a two-way thing that everyone engages in. Hence, in order to be a good nurse, you have to be a good listener as well. You must have the ability to communicate with your patients. They must not just hear but truly understand what their patient is saying. At the same time, they must be able to explain the medical condition of the patient in layman's terms. Of course, good communication with their superior and colleagues is important as well.
Nursing is a fairly stressful situation. Happy endings as depicted in TV shows are not always the case. Helping a patient get back to his or her knees, reuniting families and the like may happen from time to time but suffering and even death is part of the process. Nurses should be emotionally stable. No one wants a stoic nurse, of course but neither do we want one who gets too emotionally involved that he or she cant think straight anymore. To cope with stressful situations, a good nurse needs a level head.
Nurses should really care about their patients. They need to be able to put themselves in ther patient's shoes. They must be able to relate to their pain. That is the only way to improve customer care. Empathize with them and know how they feel. Be careful though because it is possible to get tired of empathizing.
